Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, she celebrates her heritage as both a sixth generation Black Canadian\/Underground Railroad descendant and daughter of an Afro-Caribbean immigrant. Irene is a graduate of the University of Windsor, Western University, and Queen&#8217;s University, and teaches at St. Clair College and Huron University. Irene\u2019s published work has included history, poetry, and journalism. Her short documentary producer credits have included the award-winning The North Was Our Canaan (2020) and Across the River to Freedom (2024.) She was recently featured in the Discovery Channel mini-series Secrets of the Underground Railroad and the CBC series Black Life: Untold Stories. Irene fulfills community roles including President of the Essex County Black Historical Research Society, Chair of the Buxton Annual History and Genealogy Conference, co-host of the All Write in Sin City podcast, co-founder of Black Women of Forward Action, member of the Canterbury College board, and member of the University of Windsor Board of Governors. Nationally, Irene has served on the Anglican Church of Canada&#8217;s Dismantling Racism Task Force as well as on the Strategic Planning Working Group, and is a past Co-Chair\/Interim Chair of Black Anglicans of Canada. Recognitions have included the Harriet Tubman Award for Commitment to a Purpose from the Ontario Black History Society, the Lieutenant Governor&#8217;s Ontario Heritage Award, and induction into the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women. Irene resides in Windsor, Ontario, with her husband, Rodney, and worships at All Saints&#8217; Anglican Church Windsor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Workshop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>When the Roots Are Deep<\/em><\/strong>: Learning from Black Canadian Histories of Disruption, Healing, and Leadership\u00a0This session will enhance participants&#8217; knowledge and understanding of the rich heritage of Black communities and individuals in Canada. Key contributions of people of African descent along with individual and collective efforts to resist anti-Black racism will be highlighted, and commonly held myths regarding Black Canadian history will be dispelled.
